Brookline Police are investigating after a Brookline High School student reported that she was sexually assaulted Monday by a man she did not know while walking between classes.

The 14-year-old female student reported that she was walking on Tappan Street when the man, who appeared to be in his 20s, grabbed her and “forced his hand into her pants,” according to Brookline Police Deputy Superintendent Paul Campbell.

She reported the incident to school staff, who quickly called police, according to Campbell.

“The investigation is ongoing and we have no further details at this time,” he said.

In an email sent to students, staff and families on Monday evening, BHS head of school Anthony Meyer called the incident “deeply troubling.”

“Beyond supporting the individual student and family impacted, we are planning to increase outside supervision between classes. An incident like this on our campus is incredibly rare,” he wrote.

Meyer asked students to be mindful of their surroundings when moving around campus.

“While ours is a safe campus, it is an open one that necessarily traverses public streets. Students, staff and all community members are urged to report any suspicious activity to any school staff member,” he wrote.
