Brookline police have issued a criminal summons to 25-year-old Brookline resident Seph Rose for allegedly defacing a sign outside Temple Ohabei Shalom on Beacon Street earlier this month.

Police say Rose walked up to the message board on the front lawn of the temple and wrote on it shortly before 9 a.m. on Monday, July 14.

The sign outside 1187 Beacon Street contained a Star of David and the words “We support the people of Israel, the dignity and safety of all human beings, and pray for peace,” according to Brookline police. The alleged vandal used a purple marker to write “You are shame to Judaism + Jews everywhere. Hashem shames you murderers.”

After reviewing video surveillance and receiving a tip from a South Brookline resident, police found Rose near Cleveland Circle the following week, on July 21.

“Rose appeared nervous and began eluding [sic] to the fact that the suspect in the image and video was them but was concerned about the consequences,” the report says.

Rose was issued a summons and police filed a criminal complaint for defacing or damaging property.

Rose could not be reached for comment.
