It’s encouraging to see these efforts in our community to address the harm of climate change on our beautiful parks. The projects of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy will offset some of these devastating effects. While such local action is crucial, it’s important to be mindful of more distant contributors to climate disaster. It’s possible that many Brookline residents are unaware of their indirect participation through their retirement plans. TIAA, the leading pension fund for many educators, has more than $78 billion invested in fossil fuels through some of the major companies responsible for greenhouse gas emissions. With Brookline sandwiched between Boston University and Boston College, and with MIT and Harvard just across the river, not to mention the many other colleges and universities and public school districts in the Boston area, it’s very likely that many people employed by these schools are adding millions of dollars to companies generating fossil fuels around the globe. Let TIAA know that you oppose these investments. We need both local and distant actions to combat climate destruction.
