Like many families, we moved to Brookline for the excellent public schools. But the proposed cuts, and in particular the proposal to restructure the performing arts curriculum, would significantly erode the quality of education and the experience of Brookline children. Like the decision last year about world languages, it will destroy one of the most attractive, distinctive and educationally significant aspects of the school system. These are the educational core, they are no more supplementary than math, reading or science, and they are the elements that distinguish impressive school systems from those that are doing the minimum. It is mystifying that Brookline is prioritizing new school buildings, at the cost of hundreds of millions, while steadily diminishing the education that takes place within them. We urge the School Committee to protect, preserve and improve the quality of the education of our community’s children. Short-sighted cuts have long term consequences, and the erosion of quality will turn families away and diminish Brookline’s desirability and its community.
