RE: Ice rink study moves forward, with all options still on the table

The Feb. 21 story, “Ice rink study moves forward, with all options still on the table,” did not address one option. The Kirrane Rink could be rebuilt using a different type of ice — one that would allow outdoor skating year round, cost far less and be exponentially more energy efficient than maintaining a frozen water rink. With more than 1,800 synthetic rinks installed worldwide, Glice® is the leader. The amortized cost to install, equip AND maintain a Kirrane-sized Glice rink over its warrantied 12-year life would be less than $75,000 per year — less than 10% of the projected $7.8 million to $9 million just to CONSTRUCT a conventional rink. Plus, the Glice surface is nontoxic, recyclable, enjoys a zero-carbon footprint and avoids using toxic refrigerants or wasting thousands of gallons of water, potentially saving 40 tons of CO2e per month.
Because Brookline would be the first municipality in New England with a synthetic rink, we would serve as a role model toward sound environmental stewardship. And the curiosity factor alone could generate more interest and revenue than ever.
The pluses are so compelling that ignoring Glice any longer is irresponsible.
