In Vivi Smilgius’ excellent article on my candidacy for School Committee, she wrote, “He also taught courses in education management at Columbia University and Boston University.” That’s kind of an understatement. For the past 14 years I have been a professor of educational leadership. At Teachers College I was a professor of the practice in organizational leadership and at Boston University I was the program coordinator for educational leadership and policy studies. In the latter role, working with my BU Wheelock colleagues, we developed and launched an innovative doctoral program in the practice of educational leadership, now in its third cohort, with a total of over 60 students. (That’s a big number.) I am proud that each doctoral cohort has a majority of outstanding students of color who are, and will be, the school leaders we desperately need. Working at the university level has been an important component of my professional career, capping a pretty unique pre-k-8, 9-12, and higher ed resume.
