RE: Town Meeting will consider ceasefire resolution for second time

The resolution calls for “an immediate, permanent, bilateral cease-fire and unrestricted passage of humanitarian aid into Gaza” and “the immediate safe return of all Israeli hostages held in Gaza.” This article is problematic for several reasons. First, it does not make clear whether these two provisions are interdependent. Is it calling for a cease-fire if the hostages are not released? If Israel continues to restrict humanitarian aid? Second, its call for a permanent cease-fire ignores the fact that Hamas has made it clear that it will continue to attack Israel whenever it can. Inevitably, this means that there can only be a temporary cease-fire, lasting at most until Hamas is able to launch another 10/7. Is that a good thing? Third, does Israel have to withdraw its troops? Can Hamas re-arm? Will the Palestinian Authority govern? Without going into these practical questions, this resolution is little more than virtue signaling. None of this is to ignore the fact that Israel has treated Palestinians abominably, and that the US should bring as much pressure on Israel as it can to foster a two-state solution.
