Editor’s note: PLNT Burger has announced a grand opening to the public on Dec. 11, 2024.

A fast casual chain selling vegan burgers plans to open a location in a prime spot across from the Coolidge Corner Theatre.

PLNT Burger aims to open a 35-seat restaurant at 297 Harvard Street, and the Select Board approved its application for a license on Tuesday.

The restaurant’s fare is 100% plant-based, co-founder and CEO Ben Kaplan told the board.

“We serve burgers, fries and shakes that happen to be plant-based but still as delicious as your classic fast casual burger joint,” Kaplan said. “Think Five Guys or Shake Shack in style and menu quality, but better for you and better for the planet.”

Among the chain’s most popular items, Kaplan said, is its mushroom BBQ bacon burger, which contains crispy onions, vegan cheddar cheese, mushroom bacon and barbecue sauce.

PLNT will occupy a portion of the building that houses Otto Pizza and the Small Door veterinary clinic. Renovations will include a new door and storefront, according to its application to the town.

The restaurant does not have a projected opening date yet, according to a spokesperson for the company.

The chain has 14 other locations on the East Coast, including one in Boston’s South End and one in Dedham. Most of its locations are located inside Whole Foods grocery stores, but it has several stand-alone restaurants in New York.
