Right now, anyone who lives, works, shops or commutes in Brookline has a big opportunity to weigh in on the town’s future.
Last week, the town publicly launched its comprehensive plan process, which officials hope will shape housing, zoning, transportation and business policy in Brookline over the next decade.
The town has hired a consultant, Agency Landscape + Planning, to develop the plan over the next 18 months, along with a committee appointed by the Select Board. The most important input, however, will come from members of the community, say the leaders of the process.
“What does Brookline want to be? What are all the important things that are really critical to the future vision of the community?” asked consultant Jill Dixon at a kickoff event on Wednesday.
Until Oct. 20, you can answer those questions and help shape the process by taking an online survey, which is available in multiple languages. It also offers a shorter or longer version, depending on how in-depth you’d like to answer.
It asks questions like “What parts of Brookline’s history do we want to keep and celebrate?” and “What recent changes in Brookline are you most excited about?” as well as diving into specifics about transportation, neighborhoods and business districts.

And if you’re curious about what happened last time the town went through this process, read the 2005 Comprehensive Plan here.
Its goals included commercial growth along the Route 9 corridor, creating at least 25 units of affordable housing a year, initiatives to “enhance community connections and preserve neighborhood character” and protecting and enhancing open space in Brookline.
